There
are various means of local transportation in India. They range
from buses over the famous auto-rickshaws to tongas (horse carts),
taxis, share Jeeps and cycle-rikshaws. The most common and convenient
way to travel varies from region to region and town to town. For
longer travels the options are normally bus or taxi, out of which
the bus journeys are very strainful. In some areas there are also
sleeper busses available. They are comfortable but is has to be
noted that one berth is shared by two persons. Taxis are very
good to travel with but generally expensive. In mountain areas
share Jeep systems are commoplace in which one can buy a ticket
for one of the eight seats.
Some
regions are having very special local transports like the fisher
boats on the Kerala backwaters, the Calcutta tram or the narrow-gorge
railways of Ooty or Darjeeling. It is even sometimes possible
to use helicopter connections in mountaineous areas like Sikkim.
Fares for those transportation methods vary, however as they are
meant to serve local business people, they are usually not sky-rocketing
high.
